Health

Organic food is better for your health. No artificial chemicals are used to promote its growth or to act as a preservative for longer shelf life. For example a non-organic apple can have up to thirty chemicals on its skin even after you wash it. On the inside non-organic foods typically have more water than they do vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants than organic food products. Even if you purchased processed organic food it is more healthy for you since the manufacturers are banned from using harmful additives like hydrogenated fat, MSG and artificial flavourings and colourings.

Taste

Once you try organic food you will notice that it has a much better taste that conventional food. You will get a peach that tastes like a true peach, apples that actually have the crisp, cool apple taste and beef or chicken that has a truly different flavor from conventional foods.

Cost

While you may have to pay a little more for organic food at a supermarket, it is actually more expensive to purchase conventional food. It costs millions of dollars every year to remove chemicals from drinking water. This is caused by the pesticides draining off the fields into the catchments areas of our storage reservoirs costing billions of dollars. Both of these are paid for and supported through your tax dollars, so in the long run you are paying a lot more for conventional food than organic food.

Animal Welfare

There are strict animal welfare standards when it comes to organic food. Animal have to be given access to fields and be fed mainly on natural food such as clover and herb-rich grass, just like they would if they were living in the wild. They are given more housing space and comfortable bedding, when ill they are given herbal or homeopathic drugs not antibiotics.

Genetic Modification

When you purchase organic food you can be sure that you are not getting genetically modified food. Conventional farm animals are typically fed genetically modified soy and much of the cotton and rice production is now genetically modified. To protest the use of genetic modification you can start choosing to purchase organic food.

Environment

Today’s modern farming practices may produce more product per hectre than in the past, but this is solely due to the addition of tonnes of artificial fertilisers and pesticides. Unfortunately this practice is actually leaving our soils in a very much depleted state. The runoff from the farms washes vast quantities of the fertilisers and pesticides into our drinking water and into the rivers and seas which is having a negative effect on the entire worlds environment. By eating organic food you will do your part in helping to restore the worlds environment.

Other Benefits

With the increased awareness of the affect of consuming chemical additives there has also been an increase in other organic products besides food such as clothing and toiletries. These items used to be very expensive and difficult to find, but now they are becoming available to all.

Our bodies absorb nutrients from the food we eat , the cosmetics and creams we apply, and the environments in which we live. We are what we eat so make organic food the building block of a healthy life.
