Even though organic beef may be a little more expensive than the regular feedlot grain fed beef there are many healthy reasons why it is better for you and your family. You may be wondering why organic is a better choice than conventional, so consider the following benefits to eating grass fed organic beef and you will soon decide to buy the higher priced organic beef for your family.
First you should consider the fact that cows have always been meant to eat grass and not grain, but cows are now fed grain even those under the label of certified organic. While some will start their cattle on the pasture, most will soon have them shipped to feed lots where they are given grain. The reason farmers do this is because it is cheaper and easier to control as well as helping to fatten up the cow faster so they can get the meat to market faster where they make their money.
The Difference
Imagine the process a feedlot fattened cow goes through. They start their lives in open pasture doing all the natural things, then all of a sudden the find themselves in a crowded, cramped feedlot where they are force fed genetically modified grain laced with antibiotics and medicines to enhance their growth. They stand there with their head in the trough eating and eating all day long. They can’t walk around to exercise they just exist gaining weight before that fateful day when they are let of to slaughter. The meat they produce is fatty and contains traces of antibiotics and other medications. This is a far cry from organic beef which is produced from open range cows who move from paddock to paddock eating luscious green grass and other pasture crops such as Lucerne and clover both of which are full of natural vitamins and minerals.
Ask yourself, why are we an obese nation which suffers more and more from heart attack and other coronary diseases? Aren’t we a product of what we eat? Naturally grown organic beef will go a long way to rectifying our diets.
In addition, pasture raised cattle are better for the environment since manure doesn’t pile up like it does in the feed lots. This manure can then fertilize the land the natural way. In addition, the farmer then doesn’t need to spend gas money on huge pieces of equipment to move the manure and this provides additional benefits for the environment. Grain-fed cows use about ten times the amount of fuel that grass fed organic beef uses which can be a benefit to the farmer as well.
So summing up, not only is the process of producing organic beef clear of all chemicals but the actual meat produced is less fatty and therefore better for your health. But equally importantly is the fact that it is an environmentally safer process as well.
